Indianapolis, the capital city of Indiana, is famous for the Indianapolis 500 and is called by many the Racing Capital of the World. Indianapolis Motor Speedway is gearing up for the 2010 Indianapolis 500 in May. With celebrations and festivities throughout Indianapolis, the entire month of May is a great time to visit. The actual race is on May 30th, culminating two weeks of practice and qualifications.

Indianapolis is much more than racing. The Indianapolis Art Center is currently featuring two excellent exhibits. Art From the Heartland is a exhibition featuring 50 artists from surrounding states. Reflecting the talent and passion of the regional artists, over 70 works are on display through mid-April. An Indianapolis Legacy, is an exhibition of photos by Tom Casalini of well know Indiana artists. The photo-portraits are hung along with works by the artists for a truly inspiring show. This exhibit continues through April.

For a cutting edge, cool event, head to the Indiana State Fairgrounds April 17th. The Pepsi Coliseum hosts a double header between the Ohio Roller Girls and the Naptown Roller Girls. (Naptown is a nickname for IndiaNAPolis.) Nothing more exciting than a roller derby bout ,except two in a row. These are the final bouts of season four, come support the roller girls, become a Flat-Track Roller Derby fan before your parents.

Speaking of women's sports, the Indiana Fever's opening night is May 15th. The Fever will be defending the Eastern Conference Championship this year, staring with the Washington Mystics. Home court is the Conseco Fieldhouse, games are family friendly, so don't leave anyone home.

Pet lovers, join the largest charity event for the local humane society April 25th. The Mutt Strut is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Let the track go to the dogs for a day, bring your best friend or a human buddy for the 2.5 mile walk or even less. The Indianapolis Zoo is excited and proud to announce the opening of the newest exhibit, Cheetah: The Race for Survival. Scheduled for Memorial Day 2010, the specially designed and constructed exhibit features two distinct areas for Cheetahs, and viewpoints offering spectacular views of the cats. The habitat is over 100,000 square feet with the goal of generating support for the preservation of the Cheetah in the wild. An amazing sight with a worthwhile cause.

The 41st Annual Maple Syrup Festival is held mid-April in Wakarusa. Not only all you can eat pancakes and sausage with maple syrup, the festivities include a tractor pull, camel and pony rides, helicopter rides and a children's carnival. New for 2010 is the 1st annual Car Show. Sports and fitness events include the 3-on-3 Basketball Classic, Tour De-Waky Bike Ride and Road Run. A lot to enjoy in two days some come ready for action.

Shipshewana, between Elkhart and Goshen, celebrates MayFest the first Friday and Saturday in May. Another terrific family event, with a full schedule of food, fun, games and activities. The whole town joins in with musical performances from local schools and organizations, a parade and merchants opening shops with sales and events. Even the hungry pitch in, at a pizza eating contest.

Fort Wayne's famous BBQ RibFest is on tap for mid-June. The 13th Annual Blues Brews and BBQ will be held at Headwaters Park in Fort Wayne. Four days of feasting on slow cooked barbeque ribs, pork, chicken and brisket prepared perfectly by cooking teams and Fort Wayne's best professionals. Grab some funnel cake, strawberry short cake or cream puffs for dessert, and settle in for some blues. Fort Wayne's Blues Festival is one of the finest in the mid-west, featuring the tops in local and regional talent. Plan now, this is one of the best events of the summer.

Celebrate history June 18th and 19th at Gas City's Boom Town 1892. Renamed in honor of the natural gas boom in the late 1800s, the city celebrates their history at Boom Town 1892. The original Gas City main street is replicated, fronting booths for vendors and displays. Activities like old fashioned boxing and 1892 golf are planned, costumes and hickory shaft clubs are all part of the event. A terrific family fun event with a twist of history included.

Terre Haute's Wabash Valley Fairgrounds in the sight of the four day AKC Dog Show in April as well. With four competitions, each with a best in show winner, and obedience and rally competitions, this is must fore dog enthusiasts. Columbus, convenient to I-65, is excited to be hosting ArtFest 2010, after a two year hiatus. The festival is held in August, showcasing talented local, regional and national artists and their works.
