Big Bone Lick State Park
Big Bone Lick State Park, off SR 338 at 3380 Beaver Rd., is the site of prehistoric animal remains. The creatures came to lick the salt produced by the springs; some became mired in the mud and died. A loop trail leads to dioramas; the last of the springs; marshy areas, grasslands and savanna; and a herd of bison. A museum displays some of the items discovered during archeological digs. Francis Costigan House Museum
Designed by architect Francis Costigan in 1850, this house is considered a masterpiece of 19th-century design for its creative use of limited space. Lanier Mansion State Historic Site
Designed by architect Francis Costigan and completed in 1844, the mansion overlooking the Ohio River and Kentucky hills was owned by banker and railroad developer James F.D. Lanier. The house epitomizes Greek Revival architecture and contains pieces of original furniture and a three-story spiral staircase. Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum
Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum is at 106 Milton St. The company, founded by a German immigrant in 1878, was one of thirteen saddletree factories along the Ohio River in the 19th century. This factory, the only one of its kind in the United States, features a woodworking shop, a saw mill, a blacksmith shop and an assembly room, all of which have been preserved. The Schenck Mansion
This 35 room mansion was built in 1874 by Benjamin Franklin Schenck, son of a wealthy "hay king" of the steamboat era. It was the marvel of its time with a four storied tower and five bathrooms. Each bathroom contains a walnut cased copper lined tub. Architecturally the house is of the "second empire" style. It has four porches, seven balconies, eight chimneys and numerous windows.
